Does Kratom Help with Anxiety and Depression?

According to information from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, one of the nation’s most popular insurance companies, diagnoses of major depressive disorder rose from 2013 to 2016. Blue Cross and Blue Shield used claims of depression made by clients’ medical providers, all 41 million of them, to make such a determination. 

The number of diagnoses of anxiety disorders made in the United States has also increased in recent years. Americans have also reported feeling more anxious in recent years than in previous years. According to a survey conducted by the American Psychiatric Association in 2017, some one-third of Americans were more anxious in 2017 than they were in 2016. 

Kratom for Mental Health Disorders

There are many explanations as to why these mental health disorders, which are the two most popular in the world, have exploded in recent years. Texas Children’s Hospital’s Chief of Psychiatry, Dr. Laurel Williams, believes that “a lack of community” and being “worried about how busy [people] are” are the two primary reasons why people are feeling more depressed and anxious than ever before. Dr. Williams also indicated that the driving factor behind why we’re experiencing a lack of community in the United States is that most Americans feel that keeping in touch with peers, coworkers, friends, and family via social media is an acceptable alternative to traditional social interactions. However, social media is not a solid replacement for being around other people. 

Further, social media is thought to make people more depressed and anxious because many Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter users post the most positive aspects of their lives rather than normal or mundane things. For example, people are far more likely to post about graduating college than getting pulled over and arrested for driving under the influence. Fellow social media users are constantly exposed to these larger-than-life highlights of others’ lives, causing them to feel bad about themselves, either causing or worsening symptoms of anxiety and depression. Further, many social media users flat out lie about their lives, further contributing to people feeling bad about themselves after comparing their lives to others’ lives in exchange for likes, comments, shares, and other post interactions. 

Treating depression and anxiety with Kratom

There are a variety of treatments for depression and anxiety disorders. The most effective treatment for mental health disorders is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. These treatments work even better when they’re combined with proper diet and exercise. 

Unfortunately, many Americans – especially those in rural areas – don’t have access to reliable transportation. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the prevalence of drug use disorder across American families steadily decreases as their income increases. 

These unfortunate facts of life lead to increased self-medication 

Self-medication, according to the World Self-Medication Industry, refers to treating physical and mental health problems with drugs – used for both recreational and strictly medical purposes – without being supervised by professional practitioners. 

While the vast majority of people self-medicate minor to moderate health issues before seeking professional medical treatment, doing so can result in making one’s problems worse off than before self-medication. 

Although self-medication offers benefits like being the most widely-available flavor of healthcare treatment, reducing costs to society, and living better and more independent lives, it often leads people to negative outcomes. 

The potential downsides of self-medication 

People often resort to self-medication with psychoactive drugs after experiencing trauma. While some people develop substance use disorders without first being exposed to traumatic experiences, most people with substance use disorders do, in fact, suffer trauma before going down the proverbial avenue of self-medication. 

When it comes to mental health issues, people who self-medicate often end up causing their symptoms to become worse. Even if they don’t become worse over time, the substances they use to medicate themselves usually end up not working as well as they used to. 

Also, people who self-medicate sometimes develop feelings of shame as a result of losing self-control. Shame further compounds the detriments associated with self-medication. 

Here’s where Kratom comes in 

If you don’t already know, Kratom comes from a tree indigenous to Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand. Formally known as Mitragyna speciosa, the tree’s leaves are picked, dried, and broken down into powder. The leaves of the tree are referred to as Kratom, which is consumed orally. 

Mitragyna speciosa trees pump out a variety of alkaloids and store them in their leaves. These alkaloids are a mixture of agonists, partial agonists, and antagonists. Agonists are molecules that cause certain effects, whereas antagonists reverse these effects. For example, the opioid oxycodone is a full agonist, which causes feelings of euphoria and analgesia. Naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal agent, is an antagonist, which causes oxycodone to break off from the brain’s opioid receptors, effectively counteracting oxycodone. 

Since Kratom contains such a diverse, unique profile of alkaloids, combined with the fact that there hasn’t been much formal research conducted on Kratom, we don’t understand much about how it works. 

However, medical researchers didn’t know how cannabis worked at one point in time. Although millions of anecdotal reports over the years suggested that cannabis was an effective medicine, it was never utilized by the United States government. Hundreds of thousands of anecdotal reports over the past decade indicate that using Kratom for depression is an effective form of self-medication. It’s great that Kratom is legal in the United States at the federal level, though it isn’t prescribed by physicians, let alone formally recommended by them. 

Use Kratom for depression at your own risk and closely monitor the upsides and downsides of using it throughout your journey of self-medicating with it. Since Kratom can cause dependency, you should be careful, though the dependency caused by using Kratom over the long run is often worth the subjective levels of relief that users receive from it. 

People also experience similar success in using kratom for anxiety. The current body of research, although limited, suggests that people feel less anxious and depressed after consuming Kratom because of its effects on the brain’s opioid receptors. 

More upsides of using kratom for depression and anxiety 

Kratom is inexpensive. In the United States, a fair price for a kilogram of raw, powdered Kratom is roughly $100. Considering that the average weight of doses of Kratom range anywhere from one to 10 grams – sometimes slightly more – they cost between $0.10 and $1.00 per dose. When it comes to using Kratom for anxiety, many people are drawn to the substance because it’s so affordable. 

Unlike illicit drugs, which aren’t inherently bad, Kratom is legal in most places throughout the country. People who use illegal drugs to self-medicate have an incentive to switch from illegal psychoactive drugs to Kratom as a means of staying out of legal trouble.
